When building a good-sized extension it’s natural to focus on the space you’ll gain – but before you begin it’s worth considering how the extension will affect the existing room.
A room often loses a window when being extended, so spare a thought for how much light that room will get once the extension is finished. It would be a shame to gain some valuable extra space but to create some dark and gloomy rooms in the process
When looking for aluminium windows for an extension the answer may be as simple as designing in lots of large windows, or perhaps a large sliding patio door or bifold door that can open up the extension to the garden.
Another option may be to add a roof window in the extension near to the opening to the existing house. A lantern roof incorporated into a flat roof extension can look simply stunning. It can not only provide the existing room with some much-needed natural light, but can also become a great feature of the new extension.
For a two storey extension, you could even speak to your architect about the possibility of some full height curtain walling. This can give you a really striking wall of glass across the back of your house and open up all sorts of possibilities for double-height ceilings, some quite spectacular open spaces… and some terrific views.
