Decorating our homes to celebrate various seasonal events is becoming increasingly popular in the UK. Whether it’s an Easter wreath on the door, or a garden full of Halloween ghosts and ghouls, more people are taking the opportunity to adorn their homes with lights and decorations. But perhaps unsurprisingly, the season that still gets us spending and decorating the most, is Christmas. According to the IPA insight Christmas Report, the average British consumer will spend around £200 on Christmas decorations in 2024 alone.
While Christmas decorations obviously fill our homes as well, there seems to be an increasing emphasis on going bigger and better on the decorations that either adorn the exterior of our properties, or that are fixed inside, but can be seen from outside. This makes windows and doors prime real estate for our decorations! This article in House Beautiful magazine is dedicated to bringing windows into the decorating fold and giving them more festive attention. However, care must be taken because the wrong hanging ornament, or the wrong use of fixing method could scratch or mark the frames or glass.
How to decorate your home safely
Before we look at the best options for decorating your windows and doors safely, it’s worth noting some things to avoid. Try to keep any sharp edges away from the window or door because aluminium frames and glass can be scratched. It’s also worth avoiding the use of Blu-Tack, Sellotape and glue to fix your decorations in place. All these things either aren’t strong enough to hold decorations in place on a window or can leave a residue that is at best very difficult to remove.
That’s what we can’t do, so what can we do?
- One of the best ways to decorate a window safely, is to put your Christmas tree directly in front of the window for all to see. This is a great way to bring a festive look to the inside and outside of your home at the same time.
- Of course, it’s not always practical to place your tree in front of the window, so another way to safely decorate, is to use the windowsill. There are a whole host of LED candle displays or light-up window decorations that have been designed to sit in the windowsill and can be used in any window in the home.
- If you want to decorate the glass in any of your windows, but don’t want problematic residue left behind, ‘window clings’ are a good option. These decorations work by clinging to the glass with static, but make sure you have a clean surface before you apply them. There are now some impressive designs available in this format giving a stylish and safe way to decorate the glass of our windows and doors.
- Another way to avoid using the glass or frame of the window at all is to make use of a curtain rail instead. There are two options here. One is to leave your curtains open for the festive period, which makes it easier to adorn your rail with lights or other hanging decorations, or you can thread your decorations in between the curtain eyelets so you can still use your curtains throughout.
- For those that don’t want to or are unable to use their curtain rail, another option is to decorate the outside of your window. The same care should be taken though, not to scratch or damage the frame or glass in any way, while fixing the decorations in place. Sucker hooks are a good option for decorating glass outdoors or self-adhesive hooks specifically designed for outdoor surfaces can help you decorate around your window, rather than on it.
