New report highlights continued popularity of aluminium home improvements

You only have to look around a typical housing estate in the UK to see that aluminium home improvements are increasing in popularity. While aluminium sliding and bi-folding doors have been popular since programmes like Grand Designs highlighted their aspirational aesthetics, an increasing number of consumers in all types of properties, are choosing aluminium windows and doors to upgrade their homes. As a supplier of these important products, we are of course aware of the shifting demand, but it’s always interesting to hear fresh market information that supports our own experience.

A new industry report that investigates which products home improvement companies are selling, has just been released and the findings make for an interesting read.

A hike in popularity for aluminium windows and doors

The new report has been produced by WindowBASE, pioneers for accurate research and the provision of comprehensive data for the companies making and supplying window and door materials, and Tommy Trinder, a software company that supplies the window and door sectors with technology to help installers provide simple quote in the home.

The report looks at which products installation companies are selling today, compared with 2006. The findings highlighted that in 2006 27.7% of installers were selling aluminium home improvements while in 2023 a whopping 63.5% of installers had aluminium windows and doors in their portfolio of products. The report also followed changes in manufacturers in the sector. In 2006 51% of window manufacturers sold windows and doors made of PVC-U, while in 2023 this figure fell to 36%.

The same report also suggests that aluminium windows, bi-folds and sliding doors now make up 28% of the entire market when it comes to homes across Britain. The momentum for aluminium is most certainly here and it is likely this is only going to increase over the coming years.

What does this mean for consumers searching for new home improvements?

It depends what kind of consumer you are as to how much credence you give to fashions and trends, but whether or not keeping up with the Jones’ is important to you, there is a level of reassurance to be gained from knowing so many other people are choosing aluminium windows and doors. So much so, that an increasing number of home improvement companies are dedicating their entire business to the material.

At the end of the day, it shouldn’t matter what everyone else is doing, the most important thing is that you find the right material for your windows and doors, the right aesthetic for your property, and the right thermal and security features for your peace of mind. Because aluminium is proving popular, and more installation businesses are offering aluminium windows, sliding doors, and bi-fold doors, it’s especially important to pay your due diligence when selecting a supplier to work in your home. Unfortunately, there are some companies that will try to exploit this increased demand by offering products that are not fit for purpose.
